An air conditioner in Hillsborough County runs far more hours than the same unit would almost anywhere else in the country. Cooling season here is closer to nine months than three, and the compressor does not get the long winter rest that manufacturers assumed when they wrote the expected service life.
Humidity is the second factor. A system in Tampa spends much of its energy pulling moisture out of the air rather than dropping the temperature, which means longer run times, more condensate, and a drain line that will eventually clog if nobody flushes it. Clogged drains are one of the most common reasons we get called out in August.
Salt air matters if you are near the bay. Condenser coils and electrical contacts corrode faster in Ballast Point, Davis Islands, and the neighborhoods along the water than they do inland, and a coil that looks fine from three feet away can be badly degraded up close.
The practical result is that a system in Tampa tends to reach the end of its useful life closer to twelve years than the twenty you might see quoted nationally. That is not a reason to replace early. It is a reason to keep up with maintenance and to be realistic when a major component fails on an older unit.
If the system is under about ten years old and the failed part is a capacitor, a contactor, a blower motor, or a control board, repairing it is almost always the right call. Those are bounded costs on a unit that still has years left in it, and replacing the whole system over one of them is money you do not need to spend.
The calculation changes with the compressor or a leak in the evaporator coil. Those are the two most expensive components in the system, and on a unit past ten years you are spending a large fraction of replacement cost to extend the life of equipment that is already near the end of it.
Older R-22 systems are their own case. The refrigerant is no longer produced, prices have climbed accordingly, and a significant leak on an R-22 unit is usually the point where replacement becomes the cheaper path over any reasonable time horizon.
