CHOOSING AN AIR CONDITIONING TYPE

If you’re looking to build a new home or renovate an existing one, chances are that you’re thinking about air conditioning. What type will be right? What options exist for making your spaces comfortable without compromising efficiency? Hopefully, with our help, choosing a central air system type will be a breeze! Here’s how you can get started with choosing an air conditioning type.
Step 1. Know your options. Central air conditioning usually comes in four varieties:
Heat pumps, which pump hot air out of a home when it’s warm and is usually only suitable for mild climates.
Split systems, which use an evaporator placed indoors, a compressor and condenser placed outdoors, and ductwork to cool and circulate air throughout your home.
Packaged central air conditioners, which combine the evaporator, condenser, and compressor into a single unit that’s placed outside and can then duct cool air back into your home.
Ductless mini-split systems, which allow for central cooling without ductwork, but require the air conditioning units to be installed high up on the wall. Step 2. Consider your budget. Depending on where you live, there may be cost considerations that will affect what type of air conditioning you choose. For example, ductless mini-splits can be costly when you need to cool an entire house – it’s often 30% more for the same amount of cooling power as a ducted system. Research the HVAC companies close to you and what options might be most affordable and well-suited to your property.
Step 3. Look for efficiencies. Efficient cooling is important for keep your energy costs reasonable, so do your research before you make a decision to see which type will offer efficient cooling for your home and also has an appropriate SEER rating. The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) recommends that people who live in a hot, humid client choose air conditioning systems with a SEER of at least 15 to achieve not only great cooling power, but better efficiency.
